Built on stilts over the Gweek Estuary, the pottery is a beautiful place to work while listening and watching the wading birds.
I’ve been running courses, also known as ‘The Great Gweek Pottery Throwdown’ for the past 5 years with groups of up to 6 people, often complete beginners. We always stop for homemade cake and tea half way through.

About Me: Zoe Freeman

I’ve been playing with clay since my twenties as my mother was a ceramics teacher. I became enthusiastic after making tiles for my house 25 years ago and have since made many ceramic murals which I’ve sent to many countries, as far as Australia.
I’ve been involved with teaching for many years and run ceramic projects for the Exeter medical students as well as one day and 4 session courses.

Fantastic Location: Top of the Gweek Estuary

The pottery is located at the top of the Helford Estuary and next to the Gweek Quay boatyard. The Gweek quay cafe or the wonderful Gweek shop are popular spots for lunch before the ceramic afternoon classes.
There is a big garden with the lawn going down to a jetty and room for a pit fire and Raku firing. The wood fire kiln will be functional from the end of this year in a nearby field which has views of the creek.

Guineapigs

I’ve been making Guineapigs for many years as I adore their character and had them when I was a child. They are individually made with their own unique character! I use them for dishclothes by the sink and for herbs on the windowsill. They’ve always been very popular as exhibitions where they literally run out the door!

Tile Commissions

I make backsplashes for kitchens and bathroom using earthenware clays and rolling foliage into the clay to create an imprint. Sometimes I incorporate a view or some animals or birds. The tiles are then fired before painting with glaze before the final firing to 1100 degrees centigrade . The process takes about a month as the tiles need to dry slowly to reduce warping. I’ve sent them to France, USA and Australia but I prefer people to collect if possible!
My tiles are 10×10 or 14x14cm and I also have 10cm hexagonal ones
Please contact me to discuss commissions. As a guide a panelof 8 14×14 cm tiles is £200.
